Euro 2016: Switzerland

Shaqiri 1200x500 switzerland

With Euro 2016 just around the corner we thought we’d take a look at the hopes of Stoke’s players in the tournament.

First up, we concentrate on Xherdan Shaqiri’s Switzerland.

Shaqiri’s up and down season hasn’t stopped him becoming Switzerland’s main man.

Whilst there is no doubt the Swiss have a talented squad, their hopes are likely to rest on the performances from Stoke’s number 22.

The ‘Alpine Messi’ had a terrific World Cup two years ago- his hat-trick against Honduras a particular highlight- and those displays helped send Switzerland into the knockout rounds.

The draw has been favourable to them in France. Despite coming up against the hosts, the Swiss should have too much for Romania and Albania. In an interesting twist, Shaqiri has dual nationality with Switzerland and Albania, so it’s sure to be a special fixture on 11 June.

Progression from their group would set up a possible Second Round fixture against England- the Three Lions winning both matches in recent qualification.

A bit of luck following progression from Group A and Switzerland could raise quite a few eyebrows. Until then, their aim will be to simply get through the group.
