Everton 1-0 Stoke City
Stoke slipped to a second consecutive league defeat at Goodison Park today.
Everton shaded a close match, with Stoke’s recent fortunes summed up by the only goal of the game.
Another debatable refereeing decision went against The Potters when Phil Bardsley was adjudged to have pushed Ashley Williams in the back, but the resultatnt spot kick was superbly saved by Shay Given.
Given’s save from Leighton Baines hit the post though, and went into the back of the net off the goalkeeper.
The stopper was Stoke’s best player on the day, but shortly after his unfortunate own goal the visitors almost equalised.
Marko Arnautovic cut inside but his shot was deflected onto the bar and to safety- Stoke missing that bit of luck that Everton had benefitted from just minutes before.
The decision to start Peter Crouch upfront didn’t quite come off, and made even more bizarre when we only seemed to start crossing the ball once he was substituted.
His replacement Jonathan Walters was caught flat footed as Stoke’s final chance, created by Arnautovic, rolled agonisingly across the box.
Three matches down and just one point.
On to Deadline Day we go…
Stoke City: Given, Bardsley, Shawcross, Cameron, Pieters, Allen, Whelan, Imbula (Bojan 78), Diouf (Ramadan 78), Arnautovic, Crouch (Walters 65).
