Hamburger SV 1-0 Stoke City
Stoke slipped to a tight loss in Hamburg over the weekend.
With one week to go before the start of the campaign, there were more questions asked than answered with Stoke failing to create a scoring opportunity in the second half.
Mame Diouf had Stoke’s best opportunity, but he shot straight at the goalkeeper. And we were left to rue that missed chance when Michael Gregoritsch tucked home the only goal of the match in the 56th minute.
Marko Arnautovic was left at home as a precaution, and his absence allowed Ramadan Sobhi to make a first appearance in a Stoke shirt, whilst fellow new signing Joe Allen appeared from the bench for the final half hour.
Stoke’s travelling army were in great voice throughout and stayed in the ground for an hour after the match to continue the party. The atmosphere was one of celebration, and it was pleasing to see many locals staying to soak in the chants.
Whilst the result didn’t matter in Germany, Stoke must be brighter if they are to have a successful start to the new season.
Stoke City: Butland, Cameron (Muniesa 70), Shawcross, Wollscheid, Pieters, Imbula (Allen 63), Whelan, Shaqiri (Joselu 46), Bojan, Sobhi (Adam 63), Diouf (N’Goy 87).
