The Opposition: West Ham United
The final chapter of our look at this season’s opposition focuses on West Ham.
It’s a new dawn for The Irons, who wave goodbye to Upton Park- as you may have seen 978 times on Sky Sports News at the end of last season- and move to the Olympic Stadium.
There is no doubt that they will suffer from losing the atmosphere of their previous home, but the sparkles of a new stadium will allow them to attract a better calibre of player.
That’s not to say they aren’t blessed with talent already though.
Dimitri Payet was a revelation last season, as were a host of new faces as West Ham narrowly missed out on Champions League qualification following an excellent debut campaign under Slaven Bilic.
With the Premier League likely to form a more orderly fashion this season, West Ham are probably best placed of the ‘lesser’ clubs to make their mark at the top of the table.
Last season’s showing proved they can mix it with the best and if they can settle into their new home quickly it could be a memorable season for The Hammers.
Memorable match: West Ham 1-1 Stoke. 11 April 2015. This was an end of season mid-table clash which, in truth, meant very little. West Ham took an early lead thanks to an excellent free-kick from Aaron Cresswell, but Stoke were on top for most of the match. As the game wore on it became the Marko Arnautovic show- denied two goals by marginal offside decisions. Ultimately, it was only delaying the inevitable and five minutes into stoppage time Arnautovic slotted home a deserved equaliser.
2016-17 Fixtures: 5 November (A), 29 April (H).
