Doing Their Countries Proud
There has been great success in the last two days for Stoke City players on international duty.
On Thursday, Austria and Wales played out a pulsating 2-2 draw, with a pair of Stoke lads prominent throughout.
Joe Allen’s tremendous half volley from the edge of the area opened the scoring, but Marko Arnautovic twice levelled for the hosts.
Both players were substituted, with Allen taken off as a precaution with a tight hamstring.
Xherdan Shaqiri starred for Switzerland last night, setting up the opener in their 3-2 win at Hungary.
Republic of Ireland scraped past Georgia, with Jonathan Walters influential in Seamus Coleman scoring. Glenn Whelan came on as a late substitute to extend his record as Stoke’s most capped player- he now has 76 Irish appearances under his belt.
Geoff Cameron played 90 minutes in the heart of defence for USA, as they ran out 2-0 winners in a friendly against Cuba.
Stoke goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann captained Austria U21s to a 1-0 win in the Faroe Islands- a vital win as they aim to gain qualification to next summer’s Finals.
And finally, Thibaud Verlinden set up two goals for Belgium U19s, as they romped to a 5-0 victory over Kazakhstan.
