Johnson Withdraws From England Squad

Glen Johnson’s return to the international scene is over before it started.

The right-back was surprisingly recalled to the England squad by Gareth Southgate on Sunday evening.

But Johnson has now withdrawn from the squad to face Malta and Slovenia, being replaced by Burnley’s Michael Keane- a defender Stoke have previously had their eyes on.

Thankfully for Stoke fans, the injury is not serious and just a minor knee issue. It should not hamper his involvement at club level in the coming weeks.

Former Liverpool man Johnson was hoping to add to his 54 international caps, the last of which came more than two years ago.

Alas, his withdrawal leaves Ryan Shawcross as the last outfield Stoke player to represent Stoke. Shawcross’ solitary appearance for his country came in 2012.
