Inconsistent Stoke or just that one dimensional we are that easy to play against
Stoke are just consistently inconsistent or are we just that one dimensional that our one tactic fits all approach is so easy to play against.
If Stoke play against a side that’s willing to come out and attack us we seem to be able to utilise the space left behind as good as any side in the league. The problem being is that very few in this league come out especially those sides in the bottom half in the league. Against a defensive side Stoke are all but useless without Nick Powell as he seems the only one that can play a pass that can unlock solid defences.
Todays game versus Blackburn should based on this be a good game to play, but any manager worth his money would of all ready sussed out Stoke and just sit back and counter us which Blackburn did do at the bet365 stadium earlier in the season.
Stoke in particular O’Neill needs to find a plan B or else next season will be more of the same.
How have we faired in previous meetings.
Todays fixture will be the 99th meeting between the two sides
Stoke wins 37
Blackburn wins 44
The last meeting
Blackburn came to the bet365 stadium back in November when it looked like both sides would be contenders for play off spots. Stoke were sat 6th in the league at the time, that was one place and one point above Blackburn. The game wasn’t the best to watch with only a handful of shots on target between the two sides. Blackburn sat back and countered our slow build up play. The game ended 1-0 to Blackburn when shortly after half time Khadra scored with Blackburn’s first shot on target.
Form (last 4 games)
Stoke 1-0 Sheffield United
Reading 2-1 Stoke
WBA 1-3 Stoke
Stoke 0-1 Bristol City
Reading 1-0 Blackburn
Coventry 2-2 Blackburn
Blackburn 1-1 Blackpool
Peterborough 2-1 Blackburn
Blackburn were one of the Form sides in the league going into the new year with Brereton-Diaz scoring for fun. Since the turn of the year Blackburn’s form has turned dramatically which seemed to be in some way affected by the injury of Brereton-Diaz. Blackburn have only won 4 league games since New Years Day which is one less that Stoke.
Who’s the threat
Stoke born Ben Brereton-Diaz is a huge threat and his ankle injury proper derailed Blackburn’s promotion push. Ben has only just come back from that injury but did score in his last appearance. Bradley Dack returned from injury in the last game just in time for Blackburn’s attempts to get back into the play off spots.
How could Stoke set up for the game.
Stoke named an unchanged side last time out for the first time in ages, was that the right call as the game tactics needed to be different against a totally different team in terms of quality and approach to the game. The side we started against WBA would probably be the best choice though Sawyers wasn’t allowed to play that game so I’d bring him back into the fold, I’d also like to know what Josef Bursik needs to do to get back in the team over Bonham who has done nothing to show he’s a championship goalkeeper never mind keeping England U21’s keeper out the side
