Spreading The Goals
There has been an obvious shortage of goalscorers so far this season.
Stoke’s opening eight Premier League games have seen just four different player’s names on the scoresheet.
Xherdan Shaqiri, Bojan, Marko Arnautovic and Joe Allen are the men to find the net thus far, with a combined total of seven goals.
There was a similar issue last season, with just four different scorers netting in the first eight fixtures.
Ultimately, nine players were to get on the board in the league last season- the joint worst figure during Stoke’s time back in the top flight.
It’s important the load is spread to release the pressure on the goalscorers. We’ve got a highly talented squad, all of whom are capable of finding the back of the net. But our profligacy in front of goal has haunted us on more than one occasion.
And we can’t remain reliant on Joe Allen’s current run of form. Whilst his purple patch is fantastic, it’s unlikely to last.
It took until the 19th match of the campaign for a fifth different player to net last season. Hopefully it doesn’t take quite so long this time around.
