We look at our squad part 1
January Transfer Window, what is needed.
Over the next week we will look at the current squad and see if we are in need of players to improve, be removed or we are just fine in that area.
Jack Butland is a 26 year old keeper who signed for Stoke back in 2012/13 season. Butland’s current contract runs till June 2021.
Butland was at one point not far back, touted as the future England number one until in 2016 he fractured his ankle while away with England, Jack has not really been back to his best since that point.
Jack is a brilliant shot stopper but very suspect with his kicking, this season though he’s even lost his shot stopping ability resulting in him keeping only 1 clean sheet.
Stoke at one point wanted £35million for Butland, that price was too much for his admirers which left Jack stranded in the Championship, he feels he should be at an higher level, Stoke could probably get around the £10mill mark at most right now especially as in 12 months time he could move abroad on a Bosman. We don’t want another Nzonzi situation where the club is held over a barrel of loosing a player for nothing.
Is it the right time to let Butland leave, I’d say it is if we want to make any money from the sale, we purchased him for £3.5mill but Birmingham do have a 20% of any profits clause attached.
Do Stoke have any other goalkeepers in the squad or do we need to buy.
Adam Federici has been called upon to cover for Jack Butland’s poor form this season, but is he good enough to do so?
Federici is 34 years old now, which in goalkeeping terms is not ancient but is coming near to the end of his career.
One thing that needs to be sorted if Federici is to stay with the club beyond the summer is his contract which runs out in June. Adam came on a free transfer when we had to bring in a cover with Lee Grant departing to ManU
Adam Davies was signed by Nathan Jones as back up to Jack Butland, unfortunately I don’t think the club gave this impression to Adam when he signed.
Adam was League one goalkeeper of the season at the time and one of if not Barnsley’s best player
He was seen as a terrific signing especially on a free transfer, but things went downhill from their.
There was, shall we say words between the then manager Nathan Jones and Adam Davies over his lack of game time, these words did not end happy for Davies who was cast out onto the Diouf step.
To be fair to Adam, how Butland was playing at the time I’d be a bit miffed if I was not in the squad ahead of him too.
Davies has played a few U23 games of late including last nights 4-0 win for the academy side of Nottingham Forest
Blondy Nna Noukeu is an 18 year old lad who signed for the Potters over the summer, having spent the rest of his youth career in Belgium whilst living with his close family, who moved to Europe from Cameroon.
Blondy has played 8 games for the U23 side conceding 15 goals, though that sounds a lot, he’s had lots of rave reviews
So we have 4 goalkeepers on the books, are any of them good enough to stop the club leaking the goals we are doing.
Do we need to purchase another keeper, especially with Butland’s probable departure and Federici’s contract running down.
If we did sign another keeper, who would you want that’s likely to sign for Stoke in the position we are in
